Indian Spices and Metabolic Syndrome: A Review of the Evidence

Metabolic syndrome (hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, hypertension, obesity) is a significant predictor for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus but also for chronic kidney disease, cognitive decline, anxiety and gastric cancer. The presentation provides an overview on extracts/constituents isolated from Indian spices with beneficial effects in metabolic syndrome and its complications. Special emphasis will be given to cellular and molecular mechanisms supporting their bioactivity. Bioavailability and pharmacokinetic issues will also be discussed with regard to the bioactivity.
