Healthy life with Mediterranean extracts: natural and safe prevention from multifactorial risks

Life Stages Theatre

There is an increasing demand for natural antioxidants to replace or improve synthetic supplement aimed to adult health. We examined the potential of some wild and cultivated plants from the Mediterranean region as sources of natural antioxidants to reduce cardiovascular risk and improve metabolic profile. Our results showed that such natural compounds are able to improve plasma lipid profile with a specific effect on the most atherogenic lipoprotein class. In addition, we also showed that such compounds significantly improve lipid metabolism in an in vitro model of hepatic steatosis. Taken all together, our data suggest that such Mediterranean natural extracts may be exploited to prevent pathological conditions such as metabolic syndrome and atherosclerosis.
