Safety assessment of ingredients for infants

Life Stages Theatre
The nutritional status of infants and young children is one of the most sensitive and important areas for the functional foods and supplements industry. Along with essential vitamins and minerals and DHA omega-3 a whole new generation of function ingredients is emerging including protein isolates, probiotics and human milk oligosaccharides. But not only that, critically the food and supplement products contain food additives to keep them stable and make them deliverable in an acceptable format to this age group. Recently the Scientific Committee of EFSA has launched a Public consultation on the draft EFSA guidance on the risk assessment of substances present in food intended for infants below 16 weeks of age. This presentation will review the outcomes and consider the implications for industry.
