Probiotic Product Safety for Vulnerable Populations

Probiotics are generally manufactured as functional foods and dietary supplements. These products are intended for the general population and fulfill the quality criteria set by the local regulations. However, increasingly probiotic products are also in vulnerable populations. Health care workers may assume that the probiotic products comply with the same quality criteria as pharmaceuticals. Due to their microbial nature, specific quality criteria may be required. These do not yet exist; the need and options for this will be discussed.
